This work in gouache is one of a series on the theme of the four elements and represents fire. The eye in the furnace is symbolic of the life force; the spirit of the universe present throughout creation; all seeing, all knowing and linked to the image of the "Green Man". There are natural forces such as the volcano in the work but they are combined with mythological elements in the form of the phoenix.Man is also present, harnessing fire to his own purposes through the worker stoking the kiln.
