This work in oils on wood block is one of a series on magicians, sages and magic. I wanted to paint a woman with magical powers and knowledge that goes beyond day to day reality and back in time to the spiritual sphere. She is a witch with her familiars, the owl and the hare. I felt she needed to be a "belle-laide"..ugly but fascinating to look at...a powerful face. I also wanted to create the atmosphere of approaching dusk on a warm summer evening to lend a sense of mystery to the scene.
