Liz Amini-Holmes
I work from my home and studio in
Woodside, California, we affectionately call
our tree house, with my artist/writer
husband Mark Holmes and our twin sons.
As long as I can remember I have always
loved reading, drawing and painting. As a
kid, my friends and I would write and
illustrate spooky or fantastic stories then
make our own little picture books. I was
hooked! Illustrating books seemed like the
coolest job on earth.
I graduated with a BFA in Illustration from
the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and have taken classes at UC
Berkeley and Stanford University in children's book illustration
and picture-book writing.
I paint primarily in acrylics but occasionally
use pastels. I like to use theatrical lighting and color to get the mood of the
piece I am illustrating. My technique involves laying
down an acrylic wash to dry, then working
over it with a dry brush, scumbling the paint
to give the work a soft pastel like quality.
I work for various magazines, newspapers, music industry, publishers, poster
publishers and the children’s publishing market. I have also illustrated and
art directed for various companies in the multi-media, corporate, educational
and game industries.
Recently, I have been featured artist in two issues of DPI magazine, LST
collection of children’s’ illustrators and Digital Imaging Magazine as well as
various poetry and prose collections.
Some of my clients are: Owl Square Press, Houghton/Mifflin
Harcourt Brace, McGraw-Hill, Weekly Reader Express,
Kirchoff/Wohlberg, Rigby Educational, Purple Moon Interactive, Lucas
Learning, Pronk Inc., Salt Lake City Weekly,
San Jose Mercury News, SF Chronicle and SF Examiner.
My paintings and prints have been exhibited and sold at various galleries in
the San Francisco Bay Area and have been exhibited at MTV corporate offices
in New York.
I am a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, San
Francisco Society of Illustrators and The Graphic Artist Guild.
