Kirsten Berger
Kirsten Berger was born in Germany and her family moved to New Jersey
not long after she learned to walk. She spent her childhood speaking
two languages, drawing lots of pictures, making things and reading
many books. She still likes to draw and make things, and devours books
in her free time. At one point,Kirsten thought she wanted to become a
mad scientist. While pursuing this direction at Cornell, she discovered
that her temperament was more suited to becoming a mad artist, so she
changed her major and graduated with a BFA in painting.
Kirsten went on to study illustration at Parsons School of Design and
earned a second BFA. Since then, she had designed both regular and
novelty children’s books for such publishers as Scholastic, Reader’s
Digest Children’s Publishing, Golden Books and Little Brown Books for
Young Readers, and is actively seeking to branch out into illustration.
Kirsten’s all-time favorite illustrators are Arthur Rackham, Edward
Gorey, Hilary Knight, Fritz Baumgarten, Garth Williams and Richard
Scary. She also likes the children’s illustrations of the 1920s and 1930s,
the art of the Middle Ages, the pre-Raphaelites, and the works of Joseph
Cornell and Henri Matisse. Kirsten currently lives in the lower Hudson
Valley of New York state with her husband, her son and any number of
cats.
