Hannah Cumming has written stories and made pictures since she was a child. For many years her paintings had strong narrative undertones and often included text. Then while working as a primary teacher in Malaysia, she realised how exciting, important and challenging communicating with children is- most lessons revolving around drawings on the blackboard. She believes pictures and stories hugely affect children's understanding, imagination and development.
Once the idea of making books dawned on her, Hannah applied and got on to the internationally renowned Illustration course at Falmouth University College. She undertook small commissions while she studied, and graduated in 2007 with first class honours. She has had work exhibited and sold in Falmouth and London, and won Highly Commended at The Macmillan Children's Book prize twice, for two of the books she wrote and illustrated at college. Her first published book 'The Gift', written by Victoria Field, came out in December 2007.
Hannah works primarily in watercolour, but is also happy working in acrylic, gouache, collage and increasingly with the computer!
