illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - The Flower Seller-This piece of work was an illustration for a story about a young flower seller in London who receives a magical coin which transforms her life. I gave her an old patchwork coat to wear which reflects the colours of the flowers she is selling. Behind her on the wall are posted billboards advertising theatrical performances in London's theatreland.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - The Creation-This work is in oils on wood block and was one of a series of paintings on the theme of Magicians , Sages and Magic. I reasoned that God must have been something of a magician to have created the world in seven days..and here He is creating light out of darkness with one sweep of his magician's cape. He is also creating the waters of the earth and all the creatures from the elephant down to the tiny mouse and the bee with it's honeycomb which forms his pocket handkerchief. I wanted an almost volcanic feel to the landscape with clouds of gases swirling around in that first light.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - The Homecoming-This image was originally designed as a Christmas card. I wanted to capture not only the mood of the season, with man and dog returning home to the comfort and security of the cottage and fireside, but also the mystery of the season contained within the celtic cross, glowing with light, yet largely unseen by mankind.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Wise Woman-This work in oils on wood block is one of a series on magicians, sages and magic. I wanted to paint a woman with magical powers and knowledge that goes beyond day to day reality and back in time to the spiritual sphere. She is a witch with her familiars, the owl and the hare. I felt she needed to be a "belle-laide"..ugly but fascinating to look at...a powerful face. I also wanted to create the atmosphere of approaching dusk on a warm summer evening to lend a sense of mystery to the scene.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Earth-This work in gouache is one of a series upon the theme of the elements and represents earth. The eye is symbolic of the spirit of the universe, present throughout creation and linked to the image of the " Green Man" ;all seeing; all knowing. In addition to the natural forms which emanate from the eye, man is also present in this work, piping his song in tune with nature.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Water-This work in gouache is one of a series on the theme of the four elements and represents water. The eye/moon governs the tides and symbolises the spirit of the universe present throughout creation; all seeing; all knowing and linked to the image of the "Green Man". Life is shown both above and below water, the sea itself teeming with aquatic life. Man is also included in the work, having conquered/ lived in close proximity to the element through shipping and sailing vessels.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Fire-This work in gouache is one of a series on the theme of the four elements and represents fire. The eye in the furnace is symbolic of the life force; the spirit of the universe present throughout creation; all seeing, all knowing and linked to the image of the "Green Man". There are natural forces such as the volcano in the work but they are combined with mythological elements in the form of the phoenix.Man is also present, harnessing fire to his own purposes through the worker stoking the kiln.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Air-This work in gouache is one of a series upon the theme of the four elements and represents air. The eye in the bubble is symbolic of the life force; the spirit of the universe present throughout creation; all seeing and all knowing; linked to the image of the "Green Man". The natural forms and creatures shown all rely upon the element of air for their existence. Man is also present in the work, having conquered the element through his invention of flying machines.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Daniel's Unicorn-A celebration of a birth.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Rebecca's Dolphins-I did this piece of work to celebrate the birth of a very dear friend's granddaughter. It is a fantasy of a childhood world where everything and anything is possible, even riding along underwater on the back of a dolphin! The work is in coloured ink washes and pen and ink.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Oscar-
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Hare in Winter-
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Day and Night-The female figures in this gouache work represent night and day. They are gazing down upon a decorative image of a bee hive which symbolises the world ; it's people aligned to the bees, each having his or her role to play within society. The sun flower represents not only the source of nectar for the bees, but also the life force itself which is why the all -seeing eye of the universe is revealed beneath it.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Santa's Boots-This is a Christmas card design which I did for Camden Graphics cards. I wanted to show the curiosity and puzzled reactions of the cat and dog late on Christmas Eve if Santa really were to emerge from the chimney!...They are the only observers of this strange event.!! The medium is gouache.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Santa Skating-A Christmas card design in gouache for the Camden Graphics card company. I wanted to create an alternative to the usual sleigh as Santa's means of transport, so I put him on skates, crossing a frozen lake and accompanied not by Rudolph but by a faithful dog. In the background I wanted a night view of the small town where he is about to deliver his gifts.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Bees-One of a decorative series of coloured ink wash and pen and ink works which represented the seasons of the year, this one being summer. The hive and the bees within it symbolise for me the world, its people ,their lifecycle of work and their relationship with nature.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Kavaun 1-Part of a series depicting the legend of Kavaun, a russian/mongolian fairytale. This is a decorative piece of work in coloured ink washes and pen and ink , showing two heros, a lord and his squire engaged upon an epic journey on horseback.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Halloween Invitation 2004-This is a Halloween invitation that I designed in which I tried to capture the mood of the season and all that is associated with it. The work is in combined pencil and pen and ink.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Halloween Invitation 2005-A second Halloween piece in which I wanted to capture a very sinister and unsettling mood. This work is executed entirely in pencil.
illustrator - portfolio - Schofield, Angela - Kavaun 3-Part of a decorative series depicting the legend of Kavaun, a russian/mongolian fairytale involving two heros, a lord and his squire engaged upon an epic journey. The work is in coloured ink washes and pen and ink.
Angela Schofield
I am a graduate of London University, Goldsmiths' College and have been designing successfully for many years, my work having been used for book jackets, C.D. covers and greetings cards (companies such as Camden Graphics; The Oxford University Press; etc.).

My style is photo-realistic with some Art Deco and Gothic influences. I feel that my best work is usually based upon imaginative or fantasy themes ... mythological, magical and spiritual subjects ... and involves people, animals and atmospheric town/landscapes.

I work in a variety of media: oils; gouache; inks; colouring pencil; but also enjoy the challenge of mixed media studies. Look through my portfolio and if you like what you see, I can promise you a professional and skilled job of work done thoroughly and efficiently.
